What your state board handles

No matter what they call themselves, your state's real estate regulatory body is responsible for:

  • Issuing new real estate licenses (salesperson, broker, property manager)
  • Processing license renewals and setting deadlines
  • Setting continuing education requirements and approving CE providers
  • Maintaining a public license lookup tool so anyone can verify an agent
  • Investigating complaints against licensees
  • Enforcing real estate laws and issuing fines or suspensions
  • Publishing forms, rules, and legal updates agents need to follow

When to contact your state board

Here are the most common reasons agents call or visit their state board website:

License renewal

Most renewals are done online through the board website. If you hit a snag — missing CE hours, name change, address update — call them.

CE questions

Not sure if a course counts? Wondering about a deadline extension? The board is the final authority on what CE they accept.

License verification

Need to check another agent or broker license? Every state has a public lookup tool on their board website.

Complaints

If another agent or broker acts unethically, you file a complaint with the state board. They investigate and can fine, suspend, or revoke licenses.

Moving to a new state

If you are transferring your license, the new state board handles reciprocity applications. Requirements vary — some states have mutual agreements, others make you retake the exam.

Tips for dealing with your state board

  • Keep your contact info current. If they cannot reach you, renewal notices go nowhere.
  • Save every CE certificate. Some states audit randomly and you need proof.
  • Bookmark your state board website. You will use it more than you think.
  • Call early in the day. Hold times are usually shorter before noon.
  • Check the website first. Most questions are answered in the FAQ or rules section.

Track your requirements automatically

Your state board sets the rules. AgentCEtracks them for you. The app loads your state's CE requirements, tracks your hours by category, and reminds you before your deadline. It is free and covers all 50 states plus DC.
